Ravan Dying from 'Ayodhya"

(John Ames, Charles Hens, Bangkok Opera)
19-11-2006
RAVAN
I, the ten-headed,
Feel ten times mortal pain.
Oh, Sita, O Lakshmi,
O gates of heaven where once I dwelt
A lowly servitor
To the haughty angels….
I do not want to return.
Here, in the world,
Though loathsome to behold,
I was a king.

RAMA
Now that I see you dying,
I remember our past life.
I remember how you ran rampant
Through the halls of heaven,
Slaying both gods and angels.
I was sent to earth
That your fate would be fulfilled.
Do not hate me, Ravan.
Many called you a wise ruler.
Only your attachment
You could not control,
And you sought out the avatar
Of heaven’s Queen,
To be your concubine.

RAVAN
Lord of Ayodhya
I cannot forgive you.
A thousand lifetimes
you have hounded me
And a thousand lifetimes
You have ground me in the dust.
I will curse you as I die.
This beautiful love between
Yourself and Sita
It will never know contentment.
Jealousy and rage will haunt you
Until the day that you return
To the summit of Mount Krailash
Where the gods know naught of grief.

RAMA
O King of demons,
I know already
That my life will be suffering.
This was written in my karma
Even as I consented to be reborn.
Your curse will add not one tear
To the tears I know
I shall shed
Before I return to heaven.

RAVAN
Sita!
